...

Their clothing is quite similar in style. They both have dark hair. They have similar features. Kaoru is a foot taller, but Beat could fly - from the air, it might be difficult to tell looking down, especially since something had happened to his eyes.

[Susan speaks gravely now. She doesn't want it to be Kaoru, either, but... For this reward, anyone could and would likely kill.]

If we're talking about aerial, Gundam also could look like the person who attacked Beat from above if we're comparing to May. But once Beat made it to the ground, it should have been clear that he was attacking someone much larger than May.

[personal profile] inthebones 2013-11-07 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
...Did he, though? According to May, he flung shurikens and used a psychic ability to fling her against the wall. The extent to which his vision was damaged is also not entirely clear.

...I guess the next step is to find out what blinded him to begin with. Only then can we be sure just how bad his vision was if he mistook May for someone else. In advance, however, I would like to make clear that I will not blind myself to test the degree of the effects.

[Because ha ha ha she's not getting her eyes bloodshot.]

[personal profile] inthebones 2013-11-07 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I think, perhaps, we can all agree to that.

In the absence of actual injury to his eyes, it seems most probable it was a poison of some sort.

[again]

We all recall Minatsuki's case, I'm sure. The poison drove her own abilities into a berserk frenzy before she expired. This seems similar in some ways.

Hm, that would explain why the autopsy is so unclear as to how Beat died. "Apparently" doesn't exactly give us much. In that case lets map out his actions.

First the true culprit blinded him with poison. He tried to fight back but mistook May for his attacker. May threw her kunai at him before passing out and either the poison finally took full effect and he died or he fell unconscious from the shock of the attack. Either way, the killer then took advantage of the current state of affairs and meddled with Beat's body, trying to make May think she did it.

Clyde 'apparently' had his throat slit as well. We must be careful not to overly rely on that wording.

[It's still suspicious though.]

I've heard from May - she doesn't believe that Beat was blinded in any sense. ...Perhaps there's a more obvious culprit - hallucinations. There are any number of drugs that cause such intense effects.

[personal profile] allice 2013-11-07 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Hm. I guess they would get the drugs off the deadweight prizes, since Beat was on that list. ...Although, that begs the question: why not just nullify Beat's powers all together? Without them he's just a regular teenage kid. Our culprit must have been very confident in their ability to not depower him.

...I have the impression that a gonne could kill any of us quite easily, powers or not. Perhaps Bernkastel could have done something with probability to make the weapon break, but magic hair, unlocking doors, even flying and creating shuriken - none of that is quite as effective, is it?

If the murderer got ahold of the gonne prior to the murder - Gundam included - they might not have felt a need to nullify his abilities. They were very unclear in the first place.

[at this, Kaoru speaks up.]

I was in the manor most of the morning; please excuse my delay, I will fill my card out in a moment. [with May's apparent confession, Kaoru had been distracted. a pause, and then:]

However, both Miss May and myself planned to meet at the chapel the morning of the attack... We spoke of our plans quite openly, as well. There is a possibility that I was his intended target if he knew of this. [which Kaoru suggests largely because the idea of Beat purposely targeting May seems too horrible to consider.]

[personal profile] inthebones 2013-11-08 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
[A slight pause as Susan thinks over this information.]

In which case, any potential 3rd party would have known this as well.

I assume you ended up failing to make your appointment if you didn't run into this scene. What happened?

[personal profile] souredsweet 2013-11-08 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
We made no secret of it and have picnicked frequently before... [Kaoru feels horrid over it now, realizing that such open chatter might have helped worsen this issue. as for Susan's question:]

We did not set a time to meet, so there was no appointment to miss. Miss May was with me in the kitchen as I cooked and later went ahead to clear a space so that we could lay the blanket down, while I stayed in the kitchen to finish things. I set out myself about ten or fifteen minutes after her, but realized that I had forgotten to make a dessert and memorial bouquets - it was part of the reason we had decided on using the chapel, to pay respects. So I returned to the manor to do so, and the bell chimed as I was working...

[personal profile] inthebones 2013-11-08 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
May says she was at the chapel at 10, and the clock chimed at 11.

[Susan frowns, a heavier expression than her normal thoughtful frowns.]

To be perfectly frank, you shouldn't have allowed her to sit about in an remote area alone for an hour while you made cookies. She was on one of the bottom lists this week.

[personal profile] souredsweet 2013-11-08 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
I had not looked at the clock and time escaped me while I was working on the floral arrangements. Otherwise, I can assure you that I would not have left Miss May on her own for that long. ...Not that I do not believe her to be capable of caring for herself, but... [well. Susan said it best, really.]

I will not make excuses for this mistake. I can only apologize for my negligence. [actually that apology should probably be given to May, which Kaoru makes a mental note of.]
inthebones: (Solemn)

[personal profile] inthebones 2013-11-08 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
...We must all be more vigilant.

[She would say to be careful in the future, but there was practically a 50-50 chance one of Kaoru or May wouldn't be around for that.]

Regardless, the two of you often picnicked together? Was it usually done in the chapel?
souredsweet: mewtube (right through you)

[personal profile] souredsweet 2013-11-08 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
Vigilance is never quite enough, it seems... [there might as well be a "my" in front of that "vigilance" with how it's worded; it's clearly more self-deprecating than an insult intended for others.

Susan's question earns her a negative head shake, though.]
We would visit the grounds occasionally and talked that very morning of seeking refuge elsewhere due to the chill. The stable was too unsanitary... [and also Ciel was in it] I had also suggested the conservatory but the chapel was eventually settled on in order to pay respects.

[ Sonia seems to be waiting for a lull in the conversation. At one moment, she speaks up. ]

May I speak with you in private...
souredsweet: mewtube (thin-skinned)

Me? [Kaoru looks briefly surprised but then nods.]

If it is all right, certainly. I do not wish to break any rules as a suspect.

In other words, you probably weren't terribly familiar with the layout of the chapel. Neither of you would be likely to able to say how much of this scene was manipulated.

[Thoughtfulness for a few moments.]
souredsweet: mewtube (right through you)

[personal profile] souredsweet 2013-11-08 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
Unless Miss May had visited herself at other times, I would say that is correct. The longest I ever stayed there was when I spoke to Mr. Latvia while he was resting, but I was more focused than him than on the layout...
inthebones: (Skeptical)

[personal profile] inthebones 2013-11-08 04:47 am (UTC)(link)
If May had had time to see whether or not some pews were already out of place...

But there's no point pondering hypotheticals. She didn't, and she wouldn't be able to testify as to whether a struggle occurred previously. That Beat attacked her with such single-minded intent the moment she entered, though - I still think it possible she was mistaken for someone else.

I suppose it's possible Beat could have attempted to murder her straight-out, but in the chapel when he knew the two of you were planning something there - it's impossible for him to have known you would have let her go ahead for an hour.
souredsweet: mewtube (right through you)

[personal profile] souredsweet 2013-11-08 05:02 am (UTC)(link)
It would have been largely impossible for him to know of either of us being there since we did not set a time, unless he was listening in while we were in the kitchen... Or if he intended to simply wait in the chapel, or perhaps could see when one of us left.

[a quiet pause; Kaoru raises one hand, politely hiding the somewhat perturbed frown.] But if that is not the case, to mistake her for someone else... I cannot think of a better explanation for his eyes, at any rate. Mr. Lithuania did not find a swollen tongue, vomit, or anything else to indicate that poison had been used, correct? I would say damage to the eyes might be highly likely. With how red they are, he may not have been able to see at all. If he saw clearly, I cannot see how he would mistake Miss May for anyone, though.
inthebones: (Skeptical)

[personal profile] inthebones 2013-11-08 05:07 am (UTC)(link)
...I don't know if it was that kind of poison.

[She frowns as well.]

Hallucinations. There are certain drugs that induce hallucinations and madness in the victim. He was, perhaps, incapable of seeing in a different sense.
souredsweet: mewtube (open the blinds)

[personal profile] souredsweet 2013-11-08 05:19 am (UTC)(link)
I know of plants that can cause hallucinations, but madness...? [it's certainly a possibility, though. Kaoru doesn't sound disbelieving.]

So you believe that he might have... not not seen Miss May, but had seen someone else entirely, perhaps? If that was so, it is possible... But it still begs the question; who was he trying to attack, if not Miss May?
