[He notices the damp patch and brings it up closer to his face to inspect it. He's not about to taste it because gross, but he will sniff it and cautiously swipe a finger in it to see if there's anything strange.]

Maybe Poland thought it was a clue to opening a new secret passageway and we're missing a note that told him to eat the poisoned curtain. [His heart's not really in the sarcasm though.] That note just screams of a murder plot to anyone with half a brain though - if it was real, I don't think he would have fell for it unless it was delivered by someone he trusted.

Yeah, if they struggled, that could have happened. Or maybe the killer tried to shoot him from there. [With that in mind, he'll carefully wedge the bolt back in the hole to see if he can tell from the angle approximately where the shooter might have been standing.]
