[THAT'S TRUE... but the idea of letting the dismemberer free is too alarming for Kaoru to agree immediately.]
It is true, but... I am uncertain that they would be considered the larger threat here. There cannot be many reasons for the corpse to be dismembered. Distraction, a red herring, or for no reason at all; and if any turns out true, they may strike again for little or no reason.
Okay well obviously one of these six people is completely bonkers and hiding it super well, but it doesn't change the fact that just because poison is like. A cleaner method by comparison that they're not a huge threat too.
You'd have better odds fighting off someone trying to cut you up over realizing that it's already too late because some sneaky bastard poisoned you.
It seems kinda early to be compromising though, we can totally figure out both.
We choose one for execution and deal with the other when we're done.
[Susan's tone is dry.]
And can we please all agree not to have anyone jumping to defend the poisoner and the dismemberer this time? The incentives are equal amongst all of us. One important person.
True enough... Even if we can only execute one, if we can identify both the remaining residents will be much safer. There is still much time in the trial; if we can begin to narrow things down, it would be a decent start. ...What was used to dismember Miss Belarus, for example? If it is something like a kitchen knife, surely our suspect or suspects would have retired early, since such a thing would have taken hours. When was the last time anyone saw Mr. Altman or Miss Belarus, as well?
Truly, this case must be particularly jarring for any innocent suspect... [which is said less to Latvia and more just in a thinking aloud sort of way; Kaoru really does feel empathetic toward the innocent accused.]
So, you would say that 8 in the evening on Wednesday is roughly the last time Miss Belarus was likely seen. What of Mr. Altman? Perhaps if we could rule out a large time discrepancy between their deaths, it may help...
It's possible, but I'm actually referring to Touko in this case. It's not so much a skill listed in her information card, but she's mentioned in passing that she's carved puppets and such.
Maybe it wouldn't account for what she usually works with, but she has to have some semblance of what knife would work best. Don't you think?
Ah... Miss Alice and myself had to search her room the last trial and there were several sculptures there, which I believe she might have carved with a knife. Still... [a thoughtful pause.]
If we are taking into account abilities that are not fully listed, Mr. Latvia as a country could easily know how to work a knife. Likewise, there is Mr. Clyde and his improvised weaponry, Miss Alice with her weapons training, and Mr. Tanaka's martial arts. In essence, the only one who likely does not have immediately notable proficiency with knives to some degree is you, Miss Rapture, which is a little too convenient.
...I suppose that someone ought to take a closer look at the, ah— pieces, though... To determine if they were cleanly cut or if the culprit struggled, and if they had any sort of surgical precision. That may help to narrow down the list.
If someone took care of the poison and the other took care of dismemberment, then we have two ways of looking at it. One person would take care of poisoning the victims, while the other would take care of the dismemberment. Perhaps purely for no other reason than to have some fun with hiding the parts. The messiness of the way the body was left behind in the kitchen almost makes it seem as if it's in a complete, desperate craze.
Which wouldn't be surprising, considering how people are starting to act around here.
You're right though. Maybe the way she's been cut will narrow it down. I guess if one or two of the suspects end up getting caught lying about how, that'll solve the mystery for us.
Do you really think so? The earliest risers get up at around five to six, those who turn typically does so retire to their rooms around ten to midnight. That's still a large time frame, and it could potentially be sped up if the culprit - or accomplice, has strength and experience.
[She doesn't look thrilled, because who does when it's something like this. No complaining about being on the list twice on a row; eh, she's not the only one, at least.]
Altman came by the bar around 9 for a drink. As Latvia testified*, Belarus stopped by roughly half an hour earlier, though she hasn't stayed for more than a few minutes. I can't say much beyond that, unfortunately.
((*OOC: Retconned with Latvia, as mentioned in the mod Plurk!))
Ah... I did not notice Miss Belarus stop by, but Mr. Altman was there when I was. As was Mr. Clyde and Mr. Spain... [plenty of witnesses, then.] If no one saw him after, I suppose that we could tentatively place their last known movements at between 8 and 10PM.
Still, as you have said, that is a large window of opportunity...
Ah, I see. I stepped out once or twice so it must have been then...
[Kaoru's hand briefly pulls away the kerchief blotting out the stench in the room; it's a habitual-looking, nervous sort of gesture.] I suppose that is what we need to focus on for now, then. Determining the potential window of opportunity, whether or not there were two culprits involved, and why the crime scene was set up in such a way. It seems as though the window has been discovered, at least - or a rough approximation thereof.
It does, but the crux of the issues remains that slipping poison into alcohol is quick and extremely easy to do, for any suspect involved. We also know quite certainly that Belarus didn't stop for a drink, she only refilled her flask before retiring. If that's the cause of death for both victims, it could have been pure fluke if the culprit simply chose two bottles they thought most likely to be consumed. The bar had significant traffic last night, I've had some red wine myself. Do you see the problem?

...But if that is so and we can only execute one, I would suggest that we aim to find the culprit who dismembered Miss Belarus.
no subject
If they dismembered her after she was dead then we'd want to go for the poisoner because they caused the death to begin with.

She decided to retire early on Wednesday so I walked with her back to her room. That was the last time I... Mm...
[He snivels a little, but still keeps focused on talking]
It was around eight or so, a-and we'd agreed to stick together this week so if she was out later I'm sure she would have come to collect me...

[Latvia simply shakes his head]
I'm sorry, I'm afraid I don't know anything about Mr. Altman's movements.

That is fine. Establishing an end to Miss Belarus's appearances is a step in the right direction, so thank you.
no subject
I'm sorry, I just wish I could help more.

If you can think of anything that may help guide the investigation, though, it would be appreciated.
