This is so lovely all put together. What about... [After a moment's thought she points a flickering finger at the aburaage.] This? It looks like a starch staple but the materials seemed different from that...

Thank you. [being complimented on cooking = instant A+. but Kaoru's attention turns toward said dish with a nod.] It is not a starch, but I can certainly see the resemblance. It is simply fried tofu. I was not able to find the seasonings, sauces or oils that are usually used to cook it with though, so the flavor might differ slightly from what would be considered typical...

Ohhhh... so it is still intended as a base to build up on, from a culinary perspective? That makes sense. [It looks jiggly for a starch... the wiggler (child) in Kanaya is tempted to reach out and poke it but instead she more politely retracts her hand.]

What about the mealworms? [The polite Alternian word for noodles; she seems to nod her head towards them if there was any doubt.] I suppose they likewise had to be different in seasoning...

Correct! And, ah— [mealworms... HOW UNPLEASANT.] Indeed, soba can be prepared in many different ways. It is relatively bland on its own unless it is made from newly harvested buckwheat, so the flavor of the dish largely depends on what is used to season it.

I take it you likewise had to season this differently.

Mm, but the seasonings that I found for this one are much closer in flavor and texture, I believe. Still, it was not as simple as this- [a gesture toward the finely cut vegetables, which have a light, vaguely vinegar-y smelling dipping sauce nestled on the plate.] -which I hope might taste very close to what I am used to.
