[While all this commotion is going on, something has happened. At some point, a tiny bundle of flowers small enough to be worn as a pin and tied with a green and red ribbon, has been laid on the mantle, specifically, on one side of the scales sitting upon the mantle.
If you were paying close attention, you can't recall those flowers sitting there this morning, and no one will be able to remember them being there before Lithuania was accused, but they're there now. Perhaps someone has taken advantage of the commotion to place them? Or perhaps they were there all along. Would you really notice something like that if you weren't looking for it?]
[And then Lithuania stands up and faces everyone in the room. How convenient a situation, really. His face is iron in a different way; he doesn't look dead, he looks alive with a mix of determination and relief. Emotion dances in his eyes instead of being crushed beneath ice and snow.]
Listen! I'm not--I'm not a plague ghost out for revenge or hoping to get killed or--or whatever all that was. Ever since the start of this I've been playing the role of mastermind, because if I didn't the people in charge of this game were going to blow up my entire nation. They said I had to lead the five designated killers and blew up a courtyard in front of a cathedral in my capital as a demonstration. They said if I ever slipped up the next demonstration would involve people, so--
[Lithuania hesitates, but only an instant, before he continues.]
The producers have been cheating this entire time, even by the standards of this terrible situation. They've arranged designated killers, who were threatened similarly to me, to assure no week would go without a murder and they set me up to die from the beginning. I had to be executed as mastermind because someone here really is associated with the producers and benefiting from all this!
Wait. So we can't be over with this and go home yet? [ She just groans and crosses her arms. ] I thought for sure I'd be able to go back to the Stingers!
At least they're actually trying to make this interesting. I was worried they were getting too obvious.
I didn't fall for that, it was everything else that made sense to me. [ She huffs, though her frustration is not Lithuania's fault. ]
What do we do now? If everything was set up, then how are we going to find the real Mastermind? They covered their tracks by pointing them to you, there's hardly anywhere else to look!
That medal isn't even in my language. [He was kind of offended by that, actually.] We have to make them shut down production--they've been cheating this entire time.
Does what I'm saying now sound more far-fetched than my being the ghost of a nation who died in a plague and is now out for revenge? And that revenge takes the form of a reality show about murder mysteries?
I didn't shoot her. She offered to help me--she said that she could stop them from harming my people, and in return I would tell everyone--well, everything I just said.
I don't know who killed her--maybe whichever one of us is really working with the producers.
Oh thank god. I was seriously starting to get worried that we were going to have to deal with a cheesy zombie apocalypse scenario next. [STILES THE ONLY PERSON WHO ASSUMED IT WAS A ZOMBIE PLAGUE WAS YOU...]
Wait, does this mean if we executed you, all of us would have died?
[Lithuania's eyes widen at the suggestion.] I--I hope not. I was assigned to be the mastermind, even if this whole game was rigged. Maybe since someone here really is working with the producers, though...
[He hesitates, and then answers something that Stiles said before, when Lithuania was still pretending to be a plague ghost.]
Don't - don't worry about it, man. I shouldn't have said that shit, I was just pissed because I thought you didn't care and just fooled around with him for no reason. But if what you're saying is true, you're just as much of a victim here as the rest of us.
In retrospect, I should have realized that the whole zombie plague revenge ghost thing aounded stupid as hell.
...I'm really not sure why they told me to be a plague ghost. [S-sigh.] I didn't write that letter or anything, which is why I asked to see it before I started.
...I'm sorry, Miss Susan. [He still feels really guilty about his role.]
I can't believe I didn't question it, even after Rapture and I discussed the convenient placement of blood stains and so on and so forth. 'Doris', really?
Forget the apologies; we can all apologize to each other later for being utter fools. We have one day still to figure out the truth, still.
...I'm not sure. I wasn't really supposed to say any of that. [...Which, judging from the grin that breaks over his face when he notes it, is something that pleases him quite a lot. He is so angry at everyone who set up this show and put him and everyone else through all of this.]
