...The ash also smells like burnt flesh, though, which wouldn't be possible without some residue from the body being involved. Simply taking already used ash wouldn't accomplished the same effect.
...I want to burn the arm with both the lighter and the cigarette to see if it would result in the charring we observed on the leg. The cigarette doesn't have an open flame, but...
[A pause as she places her palm quite close to the smoking end.]
It does seem quite hot.
[A slight cough as well as the smoke begins to waft through the room.]
Perhaps we should do this outside, if anyone else wants to observe.
Smoking is bad for your health and might even affect others through secondhand smoke, so I believe it would be best to move outside. Miss Touko should really think about switching to a different habit. [MAY THE NARC...]
...Hopefully not alcohol, given how that one turned out for our two victims this week.
[Susan will retreat outside with the arm, though, whereupon she pauses. And retreats even further outside until they are out the front door. She hands the lighter and an extra handkerchief to May.]
The smell will be terrible, I'm sure. I'm going to use up the entirety of the cigarette and see how much it chars. Do you mind trying the lighter on the other end?
[And Susan will nod and set to work on her end, covering her face with the handkerchief. She'll hold the cigarette as close to the flesh as she can without actually putting it out by grinding it into the leg. If it starts to look... unsightly, she'll slowly move it up and down the skin.
The cigarette will eventually burn out in 10 - 15 minutes.]
...It's not a very large area on this end, but it does seem burned. Is it charred enough to match the leg, do you think?
I don't believe so - it looks more like minor burns than the charring the leg had. The lighter is creating more serious burns, but it is also taking a while for even just a small area.
Then it will have to be the electric fence. There's no other feasible means by which it might have been done.
...For the killer to plant cigarette ash outdoors where it would be blown away rather than to leave a scattering of it in Belarus's room or in the kitchen, perhaps, where it would certainly be noticed by the investigation... I'm inclined, still, to think it isn't meant to be a red herring.

Do you count your cigarettes?

[Giving a mildly irritated click of her tongue, she draws out one from her pants pocket and idly hands it over.]
If you'd like to run tests, by all means.

...How do you light these, usually?

...
then she halts.]
Do you know how to use this?
[right, 2D world and not earth.]

[Susan will be unabashedly unashamed about her ignorance.]
Light it, please.

Still handing it to Susan, if she cares to try it herself.]
There's nothing magical about it, for the record.

I expect the fluid is an alcohol or some other fuel for the flame?
[That said, now that the cigarette is lit, Susan will take it and... return to Touko with one of Belarus's arms.]
It wouldn't smell like flesh if it weren't used to burn the body. ...Does someone want to help me with this?
