week 4 - trial

week four trial

[At 9 AM precisely, the old grandfather clock chimes once again, and the doors to the drawing room are opened. They will remain open until everyone has come inside, after which they will shut behind them. It is not possible to leave on your own, although perhaps if you have a specific purpose the hostess will allow you to go, as long as you are accompanied by a partner.

The room is set up comfortably, with several tables by the fireplace set out to assist with the trial. The Hostess will also remain in a seat near the fireplace, next to the scales on the mantle. At lunch, the doors will open to bring in a large meal on an automatically rolling buffet, and at 3 PM, tea and finger sandwiches will be served. You'll be able to enjoy the trial in comfort, of course, but the information cards set out on tables will not allow you to forget your true purpose here.

At 7 PM, the trial will adjourn for the day. Players will be escorted by the Hostess to the ballroom, where dinner and wine will be served until 10 PM, at which point players will be required to return to their wings in groups with their wingmates and will be locked in their bedrooms until 8:30 AM the following morning.]

Yeah, you two seemed to really hit it off, huh? That explains a lot. [There's something thoughtful in his voice, like a question he wants to ask, but he shakes his head and changes the subject.]

They wouldn't have a show if the incentives weren't at least a little tempting. But an egg that's already been destroyed, the rules to the universe, being able to broadcast a secret in a hippie technologically-blind world...it never crossed your mind that the matriorb in your cabinet could have been fake?
speakveryclearly: Kanaya with pupils reduced to dots at complete loss for words; interestingly, jade lipstick and eye makeup. (No Words)

[personal profile] speakveryclearly 2013-10-19 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
What, do you mean made out of realistic plastic?

[She's grateful that he isn't pushing the issue of her relationship with Annie but this suggestion has obviously Never crossed her mind.]

Something like that, yeah. The people running this place can obviously mess with our minds and have access to our memories, but actually producing items that should be impossible to get? Like my item was a cure for lycanthropy, but I've never even heard of something like that existing in my world-- [annnnd it's at this point that Stiles realizes telling someone who's about to die that they may have just killed and sacrificed their own life for a fake is probably not the most sensitive thing to do]

Uh, but then again, what do I know? Susan's rules thing felt super freaky even when I was just staring at it, so I could definitely be in the wrong about this.
speakveryclearly: Kanaya rendered with ugly realism, staring at the viewer like rotten meat. (Undead)

[personal profile] speakveryclearly 2013-10-19 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
[She is even more grateful to Stiles now, understanding his thought process and rationale for stopping.]

Yeah, your report had given off the impression that item was a pretty serious one. Good luck finding that medical marvel through other means.

Oh, and I really hope you don't take this ridiculous accusation of Poland's to heart, because it's absolute bullshit. You were so sweet to offer Annie companionship in the wake of what happened. I hope that--regardless of whether this game continues its weekly pattern, the players can continue making nice gestures.

Nah, I don't buy it. I think even if you did manage to convince her to help you kill someone, she wouldn't have let you target one of the few people in this place willing to be friends with her. And you didn't need an accomplice to help you pull this off anyway.

[He flushes, the tips of his ears turning red.] I dunno if sweet's the word you're looking for. Guilty, maybe. What she did was terrible, but it was because of that that none of our secrets wound up going public after all. It wouldn't have felt right shunning her when we all profited off of her actions.
speakveryclearly: Kanaya looking down with shades on and a thin, grim glow. (Displeased)

[personal profile] speakveryclearly 2013-10-19 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
[There's an ominous note in her voice] I'd actually be more afraid of what will happen in this place if we go a week without a murder. Somehow I doubt the producer of this show would like that very much.

[She nods at his assessment of her not needing an accomplice.] I just didn't want to drag anyone down with me... even Kaoru, I feel bad about being deceptive but putting her life at risk would have been worse.

Maybe this whole thing is a test of character and they'll send us home if we prove that we're not willing to kill innocent people no matter what incentives they give us. Or maybe they'll just stop the show since it'd be too boring. Either way, I don't really give a shit about what the producer likes.

I get that. It sucks that you were even put into that position in the first place. [He bites his lip.] And I might just be saying that after finding out Rin wanted to kill two people for a hit song, but the stakes they're making us play for isn't fair at all.
speakveryclearly: Someone holds Kanaya's chin in their hand; she looks over at them, eyes lidded, blushing slightly, brows raised. (Uncomfortable)

[personal profile] speakveryclearly 2013-10-19 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
The test of character thing -- it would just be too human, wouldn't it?

[she scoffs.]

It's strange, how this group has its human majority but an undeniable mix in its minorities, making it impossible for us all to understand each other's points of view. Nations. A banshee, sadly formerly. My own case. And for Rin... I don't know this for sure, but she was a robot made to sing, wasn't she? Maybe her continued maintenance was dependent on staying atop the charts.

[personal profile] humanic 2013-10-19 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I doubt thinking that it's morally wrong to kill innocent people is reserved solely for humans. And thinking that people's lives don't matter...well, that's not exactly a trait only found in aliens either.

Difficult, sure, but impossible? I don't know. I might have agreed with you a couple of years ago, but a couple of years ago most of the people I knew were humans. You and Annie hit it off, and she's human, yeah? There'll always be people you'll never understand, but I think that has more to do with personalities than species.
speakveryclearly: Kanaya with faintly upquirked lips and eyebrows at a whimsical Terezi. (Uncertainty)

[personal profile] speakveryclearly 2013-10-19 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe. I think the human touch to this game, though, increases the possibility we'll all band together and escape. Your people, you like that sort of ending for your movies. Right?
humanic: (Default)

[personal profile] humanic 2013-10-19 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
[He laughs dryly.] Unfortunately, movies aren't real. We watch them because we want to see a happy ending when real life doesn't work that way. Besides, we're more into antihero gritty reboots these days.
