[Kaoru, who hasn't been looking entirely well since the trial, only pales further after reading over the papers.]

This "audience"... Continuing such a charade in the face of so many already dead, it's beyond cruel.

[Susan exhales slowly, her eyes still glued to the papers.]

If it is true that this is put on for entertainment, perhaps they don't believe any of this to be real. A stage show.

That is all I can hope to say in their defense.

Do you think it possible...? To stage such believable scenes as these, and for people to not question it at all?

[to think that people out there might simply believe they're all good actors and actresses rather than in genuine distress somehow seems terrible in its own right.]

I don't know. Frankly, I don't think it's worth any of our time to ponder such things. It is what it is.

All of this is a distraction from what we really need to focus on - finding a way out of this mess.

Ah—

[the first murder had been such a large change that Kaoru had hardly even noticed. there was a definite shift, from searching the library and the outdoors for a way to escape to searching for clues.]

...That is very true. My apologies, I do not mean to derail. [a quick glance back to the board.] The safety of those on the lower lists should be secured, as well, before focus is given to the task of escape.

[personal profile] inthebones 2013-10-06 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
That wasn't directed at you personally, Kaoru. You've seen how I've been caught up in this myself. It's simply not acceptable to sit about reading all day hoping that nothing will happen this week - and I've done little else with my time since the first few days.

I'll continue to check on everyone as often as I can.

...

May, especially, should not be allowed to be alone at any time.

Still, I hold my share of responsibility for the group not moving closer to an exit. [Kaoru isn't going to shy away from accepting that much, and Susan won't be blamed for reading, either.

that last bit results in a somewhat grim expression, though.]

I would not wish to think that anyone could target a child, but it would be naive and foolish to hope that things will simply work out for the best now. Optimism... as much as I hope for it, is not feasible at this point.

Should anyone foolishly choose to attempt harming Miss May, it can at least be said that they will not be successful.

If I must supervise her day and night, so be it. It isn't much different from the previous jobs I've taken on.

[A slight pause.]

You must be cautious as well, of course, even if you intend to protect May. Simply because you're not listed on the lower tiers doesn't mean you're not in danger.

If worse comes to worse, it may be prudent for one of you to stay in the room of the other for the night. With luck, things will not come to such measures.

[that gets an understanding nod.] Thank you for the concern, Miss Sto Helit. I will not allow my guard to drop.

I wish very much that everyone in this house could agree to be of one accord - if only for a week. The things they promise us and the things they hold over our heads. They've shown no sign of being able to deliver on them so far.
souredsweet: mewtube (thin-skinned)

[personal profile] souredsweet 2013-10-07 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
Even with our number lowered, I fear it may not be possible to reach a consensus... I believe that, despite a lack of evidence to the contrary, many believe our captors capable of delivering what they promise simply because of the circumstances of our capture.
inthebones: (Talk down)

[personal profile] inthebones 2013-10-07 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
A dimensional transportation spell is impressive, yes. But that remains in the realm of possibility.

The incentive now is simply preposterous - you can't change the past. It would fracture the universe entirely. Meddling with time will bring about the end - and I mean the End. It's almost happened before in my world.
souredsweet: mewtube (right through you)

[personal profile] souredsweet 2013-10-07 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
It certainly does not seem so easy to change an entire course of history without disastrous consequences, even for those capable of setting up this scenario. [a pause; Kaoru gives the sheet another good look.]

Still... I fear it may be enough motivation for someone. Do you believe that disaster may be avoided if the impossibilities of this incentive are explained?
inthebones: (Skeptical)

[personal profile] inthebones 2013-10-07 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
...No.

No, I don't believe it at all.

Because as much as I believe that humans are... incredible creatures who deserve their place in the universe, I also believe that the depths of their idiocy can reach no limits.

Come Thursday, we'll be in that room again.
souredsweet: mewtube (and then it falls)

[personal profile] souredsweet 2013-10-07 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
[it was the answer Kaoru expected, but that doesn't make it much easier to accept.]

I wish that it was not so, but I will not be naive enough to hope for it. Preventative measures are most likely our best option - keeping a close eye on those on the list, and retaining our guards. ...It certainly does make looking into escape more difficult, when one is constantly concerned with the lives of themselves and the ones around them. [a purposeful game mechanism, no doubt.]
inthebones: (Irritation)

[personal profile] inthebones 2013-10-07 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
...I'm sure that's part of the plan.

[Another pause before Susan rolls her eyes and heaves a sigh of disgust.]

I can't stand being outmaneuvered at every turn. It's really very... annoying - if my hair weren't already white, I'm quite sure it'd have changed by now. Perhaps I'll start losing it soon.
souredsweet: mewtube (right through you)

[personal profile] souredsweet 2013-10-07 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
[susan that is concerning]

You have done so much for everyone, I can only imagine the stress... But it does seem to be as though things are very intentionally designed this way, and that the people here have been selected with an equal amount of care so that there will always be at least one danger to be looking out for.
inthebones: (Solemn)

[personal profile] inthebones 2013-10-07 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
[do you see these black hairs that is a sign that something is gravely wrong ok]

Yes, I'm sure you're right. They could hardly have a game if they picked 30 pacifists or anything of the like. ...There are certainly more amongst us who aren't quite what we seem.

[A slight sigh.]

Perhaps if we're lucky, they'll call themselves off.

[personal profile] souredsweet 2013-10-07 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
[does someone need to call a doctor...!]

As Bernkastel was, perhaps... though I had heard that she made no effort to hide her apathy or uncaring nature toward murder even before that week. [Kaoru doesn't sigh, but the impeccable posture seems to slump just a little.]

It is an unsettling idea. I can only hope we will be so lucky for that.

((that moment when you typo the most critical word in a sentence and write a sentence that makes sense still but not in the way you intend it to (call should have been kill)))

In any case, there's nothing to be gained from worrying about it.

We must simply do what we can.

[Susan seems to think the conversation is over as she gives Kaoru a slight nod and turns away.]
