It's mostly used a symbol of greed and gluttony... At least, according to certain tribes it was. The wendigo would always retain the same emaciated shape, even after eating its meal.

If you're not in the mood for suspense though, I guess I could suggest H. Rider Haggard's She and Allan. It's the only 20s fantasy novel I'm actually really familiar with.

A carnivorous beast that never eats its fill... That is a rather fearsome way of symbolizing such things. [these tribes are too hardcore for Kaoru, who has already paled a little.]

20s...? Ah— in reference to this decade, correct? May I hear what that is about, then?

It gets the point across, don't you think? [ She just smirks. She really enjoys mythology. ]

Without revealing too much, it's about the main character going on an adventure to seek the daughter of Isis to ask about life and death, but it's mostly about the adventures and people they face on the way there and the debate between skepticism versus the supernatural.

I suppose... [Kaoru seems significantly less enthused.

that book's description seems much more palatable, though. a nod follows her explanation, accompanied by an intrigued look.]

That does not sound as though it would be a bad book to read. ...It's somewhat incredible, that such topics are found all right for publication in this day and age.

You'd be surprised with what literature in the 1980's has to offer. [ If her make-up in any indication of that. ] Some of Bret Easton Ellis's stuff is really on point.

What is your favorite book from your own time, if you do not mind my asking? The, ah... future, I suppose, does seem to have a very many strange things. Strange, but interesting.

[if it weren't for the whole life and death part of the situation, Kaoru would probably enjoy learning more about the future and other parts of the globe.]

Hmm. [ She takes a moment to think about that, tapping her finger on her chin. ] We're always busy rehearsing a lot, so really I only got to read what I could while we were traveling around on tour, but I really like Red Dragon by Thomas Harris... I haven't got to read the sequel since I came back to the states.

Gibson's Neuromancer was another good one I read. It's like a film noir in cyberspace and it reminds me a lot of Minx.

[ Wow, fantasy and science-fiction. Nobody is surprised in the least, Rapture. ]

[Kaoru is surprised, if only because like 9 out of 10 words were completely baffling. cyberspace and film noir and rehearsal and the states, California sure is a weird place.]

Is Minx a friend of yours from home? ...And— touring, were you a member of an army?

[ This is truly a tragedy if Rapture ever did see one. Who thinks army tours before musical tours? But, Kaoru's role is that of someone from the 1860s... ]

My bandmate. We're musicians, we go on concert tours and play in different countries.

[souredsweet]

[and Kaoru's expression just kind of lights up in a look of surprise. HOW COOL...]

Is that... common, where you come from? Traveling musicians are not unusual, but this sounds to be better organized. How far from California have you traveled?

It's been common for awhile. Sometimes people tour the states only or they'll tour the entire globe. The Stingers started touring in Europe first. We started out in Germany and went all over when we finally gained our deserved attention.

Then we got a gig in the Los Angeles and now have our own recording company.

[souredsweet]

So making music is your profession, then? [which is about the only thing gleaned from that. Kaoru can only assume that getting a gig is a good thing.]

I am glad that it becomes a more profitable job in the future. I have always found it quite a shame that it is not so where I come from. Musicians seem to me an under=appreciated group...

The one thing my card got right is that I'm a guitar player. Bass, to be exact. I do back up vocals too.

You'd be surprised, the music scene is huge! I've never seen anything like it. It's nothing like the underground coventry... which are unknown for different reasons, but the music business is probably one of the biggest businesses now.

[souredsweet]

The underground coventry? [question marks flying all over the place here, but Kaoru is definitely intrigued.]

My, it certainly has come a long way, if that is truly the case. ...Ah, and if I may say, your singing earlier was very good if a little misplaced. [considering they were in a trial and all...]

Gathering of witches. [ She says it so casually. ]

I don't think it was misplaced at all. I was asking if they were alright, it's not my fault if people got the wrong message.

[oh... WELL THEN.]

What varied interests. [said politely! and then quickly moving on because witchcraft and the 1860s] Oh! I had not realized that was... the intent. In that case, it was kind of you and a lovely display of your talent.

Please don't take offense, baby. You're not makin' sense. [ She sings the line from the song as if to say 'It's right in the lyrics', but not toward Kaoru. More toward everyone else's reaction (or lack thereof) to her performance. ]

Anyway, I'm a performer. A few bad apples aren't going to stop me from doing what I do best. If that offended me, then I never would have made it as a musician.

I suppose that art and criticism do go hand in hand... One would think it a difficult thing to make into a life-long focus. It would seem that Miss Rapture is quite talented even outside of singing, if that is the case. [a small smile!]

It would be nice to see further performances in the future.

Oh, don't worry. The Stingers will always be on top, so there's always bound to be a performance. How else will I stay in the popularity ranks?

Your personality seems to stand out enough on its own, Miss Rapture. I do not think that you will have to concern yourself with the rankings one way or another.
