[At 9 AM precisely, the old grandfather clock chimes once again, and the doors to the drawing room are opened. They will remain open until everyone has come inside, after which they will shut behind them. It is not possible to leave on your own, although perhaps if you have a specific purpose the hostess will allow you to go. The room is set up comfortably, with several tables by the fireplace set out to assist with the trial. The Hostess will also remain in a seat near the fireplace, next to the scales on the mantle. At lunch, the doors will open to bring in a large meal on an automatically rolling buffet, and at 3 PM, tea and finger sandwiches will be served. You'll be able to enjoy the trial in comfort, of course, but the information cards set out on tables will not allow you to forget your true purpose here.]

[ I'm just going to assume that Clyde has been observing for what's happened so far to account for me not being here, but! After a while of that, he pipes up from where he'd been leaning against the wall. ]

Well, seein' as I'm a suspect, go ahead and ask me any questions you want. I'm doubtin' that my word'll be worth much considerin' the circumstances, but for the record anyways? I didn't kill her.

But other than my word, there's somethin' missin' from the bathroom that would have been obvious if it were me. There wasn't any of my pomade anywhere, was there? That stuff has a strong smell and it's greasy, so it would have been somewhere in there, even if I'd washed it out beforehand. That stuff don't come out easy.

[godwhisperer]

I see, "pomade." I have heard tales of such substance...

[He says as though his hair looks like this naturally.]

But why are you so confident it would have left a trace? Surely you could have drowned the girl without touching your hair to her?

It smells. In a small room like that, you'd have been able to smell that I was there beforehand.

[ He reaches into his pocket to pull out a comb, running it through his hair before he waves it slightly to offer it. ]

Take a whiff, if you like. It's strong stuff.

I will not. I have no need of my own sense of smell, as the sense of my own familiars is more powerful. How long do you believe the smell would linger?

[ Familiars...? He raises an eyebrow at that, but then pockets the comb again, only to run a hand through his hair thoughtfully. ]

Hm... Can't give an exact number, honestly, but it's a while. Might be easier to ask some of the other people in my wing if they could smell it in the mornin' after I've used it. It'd be best to ask someone in my wing about it. Kaoru might be able to give a good idea.

[souredsweet]

[SPEAKING OF guess who is standing close enough to hear the "Kaoru" in Clyde's last sentence. glancing over in their direction!]

He asks you to describe the scent of his hair.

[souredsweet]

[that's a weird question... Kaoru glances over toward Clyde with a furrowed brow.]

His hair? [and then a vaguely embarrassed look.] ...I apologize for saying so but it does have a very peculiar, ah... odor to it. A bit like the grease used by soldiers for their guns.

...When you put it that way, it makes it sound stranger than it is.

[ SERIOUSLY... don't worry kaoru you don't have to smell his hair ]

Just tryin' to figure somethin' out, if you wouldn't mind. My pomade has a pretty strong smell, so I would imagine it'd kind of stink up the bathroom for a while. ...With my apologies for that. But you ever smelled it in the bathroom before? Especially since I haven't noticed you come in right after me or anything. I'm tryin' to figure out how long it takes to dissipate.

Hm... [looking off thoughtfully, brow still furrowed. after a few seconds, Kaoru nods.]

I have noticed a similar smell once or twice, but I'm afraid I would not be able to tell you how long it takes to dissipate. By the day's end, the smell is most certainly gone. I do recall smelling something like it on what I believe was the third day, though, not long after I had finished breakfast.

[godwhisperer]

My familiars will attest to his scent. I will provide him with the scent of the pomade, and then we will go to his room and determine whether the scent lingers.

[ THANKS KAORU you're a pal... But with a slight nod of gratefulness to Kaoru, Clyde looks back to Gundam. ]

That's fine, but... You keep talkin' about familiars... What is that supposed to mean, exactly?

[He reaches into his scarf and pulls out a small hamster.]

Either lower your head or deliver unto me your comb.

[ No I'm kidding, Clyde totally hands over his comb, though he's looking at that hamster incredulously. ]

...You can have the comb.

[godwhisperer]

[He'll take the comb, and let his hamster sniff it, before handing it back.]
