week 1 - trial

week one trial

[At 9 AM precisely, the old grandfather clock chimes once again, and the doors to the drawing room are opened. They will remain open until everyone has come inside, after which they will shut behind them. It is not possible to leave on your own, although perhaps if you have a specific purpose the hostess will allow you to go. The room is set up comfortably, with several tables by the fireplace set out to assist with the trial. The Hostess will also remain in a seat near the fireplace, next to the scales on the mantle. At lunch, the doors will open to bring in a large meal on an automatically rolling buffet, and at 3 PM, tea and finger sandwiches will be served. You'll be able to enjoy the trial in comfort, of course, but the information cards set out on tables will not allow you to forget your true purpose here.]

...What about the wire?

Wrap the wire around the chair handle, go through the door and pull the chair back with it to block the handle. It's small, tough and thin, right?

[admittedly from the novels she's read so far it's only ever been a murder weapon but it doesn't look like it was used on the body, so...]

[personal profile] obsideo 2013-09-26 06:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Whoa.

(This could be possible. And now that she thinks about it, there was a notch on the chair.)

I think that could be possible, but I'm not sure. Maybe we could get one of the chairs and some wire and try it.

[as glad as she is her idea might hold some weight...] ...We'd have to ask... that woman...
obsideo: (✖ lion-hearted girl)

[personal profile] obsideo 2013-09-26 06:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll ask, but since I'm one of the suspects, somebody should probably come with me.

...I'll come with you. Did anyone find the piano wire?

If they did, I didn't hear about it. But if we see what's missing, we'll know how much they used.
terriblesister: ((srs) god help me)

[personal profile] terriblesister 2013-09-26 06:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Could we grab two chairs whilst we're there? The one from the bathroom and the one in your room maybe. We could try recreating it or something. [which obviously you wouldn't want to do with the real evidence...]
obsideo: (✖ concerned)

[personal profile] obsideo 2013-09-26 06:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Good idea. Though if we're going to recreate it, maybe we want to use a different bathroom. We might have broken the door a little when we got in, so it might not work the same way.
terriblesister: ((srs) hmm?)

[personal profile] terriblesister 2013-09-26 06:50 pm (UTC)(link)
We can use the one in the Opal wing; that's where I am.
obsideo: (✖ can't move on)

[personal profile] obsideo 2013-09-26 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Right. So we'll need some piano string, and probably someone else to help us try and get the door open.
terriblesister: ((srs) pout)

[personal profile] terriblesister 2013-09-27 04:10 pm (UTC)(link)
[nodding]

We should probably try it a few times. [because lmao she gets it in theory but actually pulling it off...]
herpreciousrival: (hmm?)

[personal profile] herpreciousrival 2013-09-26 06:49 pm (UTC)(link)
If it helps Miss Rin and I discovered that there were two strings missing in the piano, but we never managed to locate them.
terriblesister: ((srs) are you okay?!)

[personal profile] terriblesister 2013-09-26 06:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah! [perfect!]

Could you come with us? I... don't know how to work pianos... [SPECIAL SKILLS: NONE]
herpreciousrival: (clean desk)

[personal profile] herpreciousrival 2013-09-26 06:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Of course, I'd be happy to assist.
terriblesister: ((srs) god help me)

[personal profile] terriblesister 2013-09-26 07:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks... [it's hard to smile in this situation, but she's giving it a shot]

I'm Yuzu. [handshake?]
herpreciousrival: (tilt)

[personal profile] herpreciousrival 2013-09-26 07:10 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a pleasure, I am Sailor Aluminum Siren. [She's more accustomed to bowing in greeting-- but she's been offered the handshake at least once before while here. She'll grasp it and give it a bit of an awkward shake, leaving her business card in Yuzu's palm when she pulls away. ]

Shall we then?
terriblesister: ((srs) French chef-ery)

[personal profile] terriblesister 2013-09-26 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Er- [wait, business card? Slipping that into a pocket quickly]

Sure!
herpreciousrival: (shoes on the table?)

[personal profile] herpreciousrival 2013-09-26 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
[Siren leads Yuzu to the Music Room just outside the Emerald Wing, gesturing to the inside of the piano.]

See? These two strings right here were removed.
terriblesister: ((srs) concern)

[personal profile] terriblesister 2013-09-26 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah...

[...it actually takes her a moment to notice, having never really looked inside a piano before.]

So, like, one as a backup in case it breaks?
herpreciousrival: (o3o)

[personal profile] herpreciousrival 2013-09-26 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe but, piano wire is pretty strong. [Siren plucks one to demonstrate, the note ringing out.] Especially the bass strings.

Removing the strings without tools though is very difficult. If both weren't necessary to move the chair, taking a second string as a back up would be prudent. It wouldn't be very efficient to have to stop in the middle of a murder and try to remove another string.
terriblesister: ((srs) pout)

[personal profile] terriblesister 2013-09-27 06:01 pm (UTC)(link)
[toying with some of the wires and plucking out an amateurish tune]

...How do you get them off normally?
herpreciousrival: (hmph)

[personal profile] herpreciousrival 2013-09-27 07:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Loosening the strings slowly is the best method to preserve the instrument, but I think it's safe to assume that our assailant didn't particularly care for the well being of the piano...

I think cutting would probably be the fastest way. [As if something suddenly occurs to her, Siren pulls out a pocket knife from her clutch.] We were all given pocket knives, with a lot of effort they might have been able to cut the wires.
terriblesister: ((srs) blank)

[personal profile] terriblesister 2013-09-27 07:20 pm (UTC)(link)
[the knife makes Yuzu jump a little, but she can't fault her for carrying it]

...Right.

Could you give it a try?
herpreciousrival: (sad)

[personal profile] herpreciousrival 2013-09-27 07:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think I could sleep at night if I did something so terrible to a defenseless instrument. [Siren opts to place the knife in Yuzu's hands instead.]

Cut the next two bass strings if you must.

[UM. WHAT. O...KAY THEN... sssob

...Still it's just a piano, right? It's alright damaged and it's for a murder investigation, right? There's nothing... wrong here...

Taking the knife and feeling utterly guilty doing it, she amateurishly tries to cut at the wires.

It takes her a bit of effort given the oh god oh god I've never done this before factor but they do cut loose]
