[ She manages to walk right in when she hears the thud of the sketchpad. She looks down at it, then back up to Kanaya, noticing her frustration. Rapture leans against the frame with on hand on her hip as she pleasantly smiles. ]

What's wrong?

[She looks over and realizes the tableau - sketchpad far enough that she would have to get up to retrieve it; Rapture her typical Aphrodite in the doorway, the aura of immunity almost as palpable as the scent of her blood. Kanaya's feelings of inferiority only become more acute as she has to muster up a response.]

Susan gave me the idea that taking up a hobby but I think it's just giving my think pan another means to focus on the most negative aspects of our situation...

[The page on top as her work lies on the floor? Simpler than some of the others, white graphic tee over long-sleeved layering shirt. She can't get the cut of the skirt-and-leggings combination right - the limbs on her model keep coming out too thick or too thin, and she's obsessed with capturing exactly (in exaggerated, romanticized fashion) how the light hair should not only be gathered up in a ponytail but completely cover the right eye. The interlocking cursive AL on the shirt leaves no doubt to the suggestion the particular creature haunting her is Annie Leonhardt.]

[ Rapture takes a moment to walk over to where the pad lies, looking at the design. She's reminded of poor little Regine — the princess adored one week and dropped the next — and her royal designs for The Stingers. Sure, they were quite lovely, but they could always do better and there is certainlly far better out there than Regine.

Still, she takes a moment to recognize the model before handing the sketchpad back over to Kanaya. She doesn't bother to flip through the rest of the pages as the single one of Annie says more than enough. ]

Maybe you shouldn't be designing outfits for culprits. That's just asking for negative energy to be drawn to you.

[There have been several not-brief periods in Kanaya's rather lonely existence that her self-worth has been measured exclusively in terms of how capable she is of making outfits for people. That's probably not a good phase to remember when she doesn't have adequate materials and everyone literally has all the clothing they could ever want.

She accepts the pad back into her lap like someone resheathing a weapon, shrinking back into herself.]

There are others in there too. I like to think of art as equal-opportunity.

[ Upon knowing this, Rapture asks the most obvious question: ]

Am I in there?

[Too quickly as if she were afraid of being asked and had prepared a response:]

Not yet, your distinctive and striking style is hard to reconcile with my own duller fallback techniques!

[TOO EIGHTIES TO HANDLE.]

[ That just feeds her ego even more. Congratulations, Kanaya. ]

It's hard to really capture The Stingers style. We used to come up with our own, but ever since we got our own recording company, Yaki's been our main designer. We can never find anyone else to get it quite right, it's rare we find something that captures our... essence.

[Flattery successful, she continues in somewhat genuine curiosity.]

And what do you consider that essence to be? I like to start with a simple symbol and move up from there but I've been under the impression that a stylized R would be a little too straightforward...

It would be too confusing anyway, especially when there's Riot.

But our essence...

[ She turns her back to Kanaya, trailing her fingertips across the mantle as she gives a slow walk across the room. ]

Dionysian and Apollonian... we spring from the earth without reason and search for truth in the light! We're fully aware of each others needs, each others tastes, even each others thoughts and even though Riot is our inspiration... we are one singular soul in three, split up to find each other through the chaos of the world itself to bring the order of The Stingers to life!

[ Rapture raises her arms in the air and turns on her heels to face Kanaya once again. ]

We possess a baroque style unlike any other, but our thoughts are beyond even the most modern and mundane realms.

[But which one of you is the auspistice? Human adults and their ways are so mysterious - the almost equally arcane ways of Alternian adults float in their place. Connecting the vagrancy of "gypsy heritage" to psychic powers and complicated chromatic castes... nothing actually indexes like she expects, but the coincidences are appreciable.]

You keep mentioning Riot... but who was the third stinger?

[ Her arms fall to her side and she lays a hand atop one of the chairs, casually shifting her weight to her arm. ]

Minx. She plays the synthesizer, though we both do back up vocals for Riot too.

Synthesizer? An electronic music source?

[This seems to, at least, be giving her some sort of idea, even if it's only like a headache on top of the balled-up block in her stomach.]

Yeah. It's like a piano but with a whole list of different options to choose from. Most of them are electronic, but it can do percussion and strings too.

She could probably explain it much better than I do since she builds them herself.

I see...

A minx is one of those furry flexible Earth fauna, right?

That's a mink. They're used for fur coats and stoles mostly because they symbolize good fortune.

Minx is called Minx because she can get any guy she wants with the option to throw them away as soon as she's tired of them. [ She pauses, waving her hand in the air. Minx's romantic life doesn't hold much importance to her despite their closeness. ] Well, almost any guy.

Ohhhhhhhhhhhh. [The way Rapture says that makes it sound like there's a specific story there... but the romantic life of an adult is something she doesn't want to know about.]

So do the words come from the same root at all or is their phonetic similarity entirely coincidental?

I don't know. I'm a musician, not an etymologist.

The most I can tell you is that hexe in German means minx and witch.

What on Earth is German?

[ Oh right, Kanaya's role is... some kind of alien creature from some planet that has alien creatures that look like vampires. This is a perfect opportunity to "tell" her about "human culture." ]

It is a language spoken only by those deemed worthy enough to read its incantations!

Oh, right, I keep forgetting your civilization isn't monolithic. [Less advanced is what she really thinks but she's trying to play it off as merely her own ignorance.]
