Maybe we should check the chapel for any existence of passages then. Even if there are some, there wouldn't be many places to hide them when the chapel isn't connected to any building. This rules out the possibility of underground tunnels, for now. Though personally, I don't think the chapel has any. It's much simpler to just say that the killer left the same way they came and they couldn't lock the chapel from the outside.
